Microgrids and CHP- A Perfect Combination
A Highly Resilient, Operable Power System that provides Caribbean Islanders with the Ability to Sleep During a Hurricane!
The hurricane-hardened microgrid at Magens Junction gives true meaning to the word power "Resiliency." At the heart of the energy solution is a microturbine-based combined heat and power (CHP) solution paired with solar and batteries. The microgrid installation provides 100% of the complex's electrical power and hot water requirements allowing the site to be completely self-sufficient.
As part of their process in providing hurricane resilient power; Jackson Development Company is committed to doing power with the lowest carbon footprint but also the lowest cost to operate. When the opportunity arose to re-develop the defunct St. Thomas Dairy site with 108 affordable rental apartments, the company turned to E-Finity Distributed Generation, Capstone’s distributor for the Caribbean, midAtlantic and southeastern U.S. to deliver such a solution.
Let's Hear it for E-Finity, Capstone, and CHP on World Cogeneration Day!

The Towers at Tower Lane, residing in New Haven, Connecticut, utilizes a 2G "aura 404" with an output of 100kW. This facility is a distinctive non-profit apartment and assisted living retirement community in the heart of one of New England's most historic and vital cities. This
unit will produce 40% of this facilities energy through cogeneration with hot water recovery, allowing the facility to utilize the savings to feed those elderly residents who live on a fixed income through a food sustainability program. The project makes meals more accessible and affordable, improving nutrition for those in need for the next 25 years. This energy justice project has received support from Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, for Congressionally Directed Funds. This ribbon cutting featured the Mayor of the City of New Haven, Justin Elicker, former Commissioner for Energy and Environmental Protection, Robert Klee, former State Senator, Gayle Slossberg, the Towers Board of Directors, donors, volunteers and community supporters.

University of York students celebrate World Cogeneration Day at its third Cogeneration plant
The energy company, Edina has delivered its third Combined Heat and Power (CHP) project at the University of York, a leading UK educational institution. The latest CHP plant comprises a 2.3MWe TCG 3020 V20 MWM gas engine and associated equipment and joins two existing CHP plants rated 1.56MWe each also engineered, installed, and maintained by Edina.
Students Get Some Education on CHP
The project is unique in that it includes bespoke artwork on the CHP container external detailing the internal 2.3MWe MWM TCG 3020 V20 gas engine and associated equipment. The artwork is part of an initiative to engage and educate the university’s students on how CHP works, its financial, carbon and resilience benefits, and how it supplies energy-efficient electricity and heat to their campus.
The additional CHP plant is part of on-going energy-efficiency measures to manage energy costs, improve sustainability, and on-site energy resilience for the University. The University’s latest CHP plant accompanies the sites existing two CHP plants to provide the University with a total power output of 5.4MW electrical capacity.
In honor of World Cogeneration Day, we'd like to celebrate and thank our staff who demonstrate their resilience daily. Whether it be a pandemic, an unprecedented winter storm or an outage incident, our highly-skilled team members rise to every occasion to provide world-class service to the University of Texas at Austin.
Because of their resilience through all obstacles, our university continues to educate students who will shape our future. These are just a few of the faces who keep our operation running 24 hours a day, year-round.

This CHP solution manages energy costs, reduces emissions, and improves resilience for UK specialty feed manufacture
Working with Iona Capital, the Edina energy company will deliver and maintain the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at GLW Feeds, one of the largest independent livestock and specialty feed manufacturers in the UK. The funded solution comprises a 1.56MWe rated TCG 2020 V16 series MWM genset and waste heat boiler to supply electricity and heat directly to GLW Feeds, thus reducing their carbon footprint and controlling their energy costs.
Edina will design, engineer, and package the CHP engine within an attenuated acoustic enclosure before delivering to site and integrating within GLW’s existing mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Once operational, the CHP will provide energy cost efficiencies and lessen GLW’s carbon emissions by over 1,485 tonnes per year equivalent to removing 1,000 cars off the road.

Optimizing CHP using Sophisticated Modeling Software
Engine CHP can save up to 40% energy and CO2 emissions, depending on (i) building energy consumption (ii) site equipment technology, (iii) thermal plants efficiency used to stabilize the grid, and (iv) the existing electrical grid losses.
Sisterm celebrates their COGMCI software and its 20 years of developing software to design and simulate engine CHP systems. It joins the known science of building energy analysis, thermal equipment design and simulation methodologies to predict engine CHP performance on an annual basis. Several case studies were
developed. Most of the cases reveal that oversized engines
(able to export electricity to the grid) can save more energy
than baseload systems.
Happy World Cogeneration Day from Sisterm!
