World Cogeneration day gives Northeast-Western Energy Systems the chance to celebrate our people and our passion. Our dedicated team integrates, engineers and maintains cogeneration projects throughout the United States all year around, even through unprecedented times. Our team recently helped a customer overcome gas cleaning issues and got (3) Jenbacher Type 4 gas gensets commissioned during the pandemic. This is one of many projects our team supported during the COVID crisis. Thank you, World Cogeneration Day, for allowing us to recognize key people who drive our business!
Clarke Energy and sister company Co-Energy America are pleased to announce our support of World Cogeneration Day, September 4th 2020 and highlighting key international cogeneration projects. Cogeneration or combined heat and power technology (CHP) plays an important role in providing efficient localised power and supporting carbon emissions reduction. Gas engine CHP plants can use renewable gas such as biogas, biomethaneor hydrogen or low carbon gases such as natural gas at high efficiency and close to the site of use. Generating electricity and heat locally means lower losses and better use of the fuel, translating to lower carbon emissions.
Hurst Boilers and Power Resource Group celebrate front-line people that keep building energy systems for the essential agricultural, food, and industrial sectors. Moreover, as society grapples with energy markets during these uncertain times, we have compelling reasons to supplement the conventional fuels used for centuries with the multiple alternatives in abundance around us. Biomass-to-energy conversion uses heat and oxygen to create energy in the form of steam or hot water that is then used as electricity and thermal energy for co-located industrial facilities, such as the 165,000 MW/hours of electricity per year and heating energy at the Carolina Poultry Project. Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, PA is a continuing care retirement community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Home to more than 2,000 residents, the community offers retirement living apartments, cottages and townhomes, and services including personal care, nursing care, memory support, short-term rehabilitation, pharmacy, outreach, home care, home health, hospice, a children’s home and a home for adults with developmental disabilities. Six Capstone Microturbines currently generate 10% of the campus’ electricity. The heat created as a by-product of the microturbines, in turn, heats water for a portion of resident apartments and the Masonic Health Care Center, reducing the use of gas boilers. “The microturbines enable Masonic Village to fulfill its commitment to energy efficiency and environmental stewardship, which also impacts our overall not-for-profit mission,” Patrick Sampsell, chief environmental and facilities officer, said. “The cost savings and rebates help offset the declining government reimbursements Masonic Village receives for resident care and services. We provided charitable care and services statewide worth $33.4 million in 2019 alone.” Energy savings are more important now than ever. Masonic Villages is facing increased costs related to combating COVID-19, including purchasing masks, face shields, disinfectant products, testing equipment and offering reduced meal benefits for employees. These items are much-needed for staff who have been assisting in areas beyond their normal roles to ensure services and operations continue seamlessly.
Clarke Energy’s team in France have provided above and beyond unscheduled service support to our customers during the COVID pandemic. After a failure of a Jenbacher J320 engine at the non-hazardous waste landfill site of Septêmes les Vallons operated by Veolia, it was determined a complete short block replacement was required. As the site was not under a service contract, there was no obligation to maintain the engine or financial benefit to Clarke Energy. However, service is at the heart of Clarke Energy’s business ethos and support was provided to guarantee continuity of production for Veolia at the important landfill site. The short block replacement was completed in March and April during the height of the COVID pandemic. A team of three Clarke Energy service technicians worked together with a lifting partner in order to complete the work, under strict social distancing and hygiene guidelines.

For example, we switched from in-person meetings and events to virtual meeting rooms and webinars, as well as devise new and innovative online services. Our economies need sound recovery plans to overcome this crisis. Being efficient and cost-effective, cogeneration offers many opportunities for a strong and greener economic rebound. It is important for the global community that this message is heard. At COGEN Europe, we are happy and proud to share this message every day..
During the heat of summer, amid the coronavirus pandemic, Kinsley Energy Systems engineers and technicians worked together with Kingsbury Construction to rig and install a TEDOM Quanto800 CHP system at Vanguard Renewable’s new food and farm waste anaerobic digestion facility in Salisbury, Vermont. Due to the remote location of the farm and the high cost of running utility power to the site, the TEDOM CHP unit will be the prime source of power for the facility, with a Kohler emergency generator as a reliable backup. Additionally, waste heat from the CHP process will heat the digesters, maintaining the bacteria at ideal conditions for consuming waste material and producing methane. Remaining solids will be used on the farm as a locally-produced, low-phosphate organic fertilizer. The result will be a new sustainable source of energy and the elimination of tons of organic waste previously destined for landfills. The project will also enable food producers and consumers in Vermont to comply with Act 148, Vermont’s Universal Recycling law banning all food waste from landfills, effective in 2020. Kinsley Energy Systems would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of Kingsbury Construction for their professionalism and strict adherence to health and safety protocols in support of our TEDOM cogeneration system installation.
