Edina celebrates World Cogeneration Day with its latest Microgrid / Hybrid co-location solution for UK commercial food waste management company BioteCH4.
Holme Bioenergy food waste processing site is benefiting from a microgrid, hybrid configuration co-locating on-site generation from Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and battery energy storage assets to solve grid supply limitations and accelerate its energy transition towards net zero.
Edina, a distributed energy solutions provider for CHP and a system-integrator for battery energy storage system (BESS) solutions proposed a microgrid hybrid solution co-locating reciprocating gas engines and battery energy storage, controlled by an energy management system.
Edina supplied and installed two, duty and standby, hydrogen-ready CHP plants rated at 1.2MW electrical output each. The heat output from the gas engines is captured and meets the site process demand for heating and hot water and achieves energy utilisation of up to 90% during the winter months, which is significant when comparing import grid electricity and conventional heat production.
When compared to the previous diesel power generation, the transition to gas CHP saves the site an additional 2,500 tonnes CO2 per year and reduces site energy costs by 50% per year.
The inclusion of a 1MW 1 hour duration BESS provides energy resilience and smooths out the site energy demand to within the operating load step capabilities of the baseload gas engines. The BESS includes three CATL EnerOne Li-Ion LFP racks, EPC inverter, and Edina Energy Management System pre-mounted on an Edina engineered skid.
Finally, as a tertiary supply, a standby diesel generator with the potential to be fuelled by green Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) provides an additional level of energy resilience. The inclusion of a private wire network allows BioteCH4 to export surplus power to its neighbouring engineering and construction business Park Fabrications for expansion and business growth.
The co-location of these technologies meets the site's electrical demand, and the microgrid infrastructure allows BioteCH4 to manage its power requirement independently. Using interim transitionary low-carbon natural gas within the CHP plants improves its carbon positioning and offers potential for biogas/biomethane fuel utilisation and future fuel switching to hydrogen-blends when available.
These technologies support the future growth of the business through future proofing BioteCH4’s energy production, through sustainable sources, in line with its ethos and sustainability goals.
Due to the success of Holme Bioenergy project, BioteCH4 have also invested in another hybrid energy project with Edina, co-locating a 1MW 1 hour duration BESS and two 1MWe hydrogen-ready CHP plants at its R100 Energy site, located in Goole, Yorkshire.
Discover how CHP enabled BioteCH4’s journey sustainability and read the case study.
The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center must be able to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including during extreme weather. The facility handles more than 23,000 surgical procedures and sees nearly 64,000 emergency room visits annually. It all adds up to nearly 87,000 patients per year.
Hershey Medical Center is constantly working to build an environment that supports the work of its health care professionals and other employees, as well as exemplary care for patients. “The importance of an efficient and affordable energy system cannot be overstated,” Penn State Health’s Marvin W. Smith, PE, said.
As part of a series of investments in energy efficiency, UGI worked with Hershey Medical Center on the installation of a combined heat and power (CHP) system in 2018. Fueled by natural gas delivered by UGI, the CHP system produces electricity, captures heat that would otherwise be wasted and distributes it for sterilization and space heating and cooling.
The system is saving the Center approximately $2.5 million per year and providing cost predictability. Dollars saved support Penn State Health’s mission of providing patients with excellent, compassionate and equitable care; educating and training health care professionals; and advancing evidence-based medical innovation through research and discovery. These cost savings were a driving factor in the Center’s decision to convert to the CHP system.
Producing electricity on-site has also reduced the Center’s carbon footprint, by about 23,469 tons of CO2 per year.
“Our reliable and cost-saving energy system is making our medical center more environmentally friendly and improving air quality in our region,” Smith said.
Smith explains that Hershey Medical Center’s reliable energy system provides one less thing for employees to worry about, enabling them to focus on core missions of patient care, research and education.
UGI looks forward to helping additional Pennsylvania hospitals adopt CHP applications and develop other efficiency projects.

Today, Clarke Energy USA celebrates World Cogeneration Day at its successfully designed and commissioned combined heat and power (CHP) system in Clinton, Maine. This CHP solution complements a biogas upgrading facility in the area. Peaks Renewables, in collaboration with Maine’s dairy industry, developed renewable natural gas (RNG) locally at their anaerobic digestion facility.
This distributed power installation is anchored by a Clarke Energy assembled COE280NC CHP unit providing 280kW of electricity for site processes and 1.5 MMBtu of thermal energy needed to heat the anaerobic digesters on site producing the renewable biogas. In addition to the CHP unit, Clarke Energy has installed a 500kW Kohler Power back up gas-fueled generator to further increase the reliability of the entire system. The combination of these two units is an ultra-resilient on-site power solution that drives a biogas upgrading facility ultimately producing renewable natural gas.
Ryan Morris, Peaks Renewables commented: “Our anaerobic digestion facility will enable us to treat farm waste sustainably and in parallel generate renewable natural gas which will help to reduce carbon emissions. We selected Clarke Energy to supply both our CHP plant and back up gas generator to deliver fuel efficiency and resilience to our operations.”

Celebration Event for Clarke Energy
Clarke Energy, a global leader in efficient distributed power generation solutions, has announced its involvement in two pivotal CHP projects working with Elsaco Electronic and INNIO Group. These initiatives mark a significant advancement in energy efficiency for the district energy networks in Arad and Constanța, Romania. Historically, these networks relied on steam turbines fuelled by heavy fuel oil and natural gas, with core systems dating back to the 1960s-1980s.
A cause for celebration because the projects mark a significant milestone for Clarke Energy, representing the first sales of Jenbacher J920 FleXtra engines in both Romania and Clarke Energy’s global operations. Eight J920 FleXtra CHP engines will deliver a total of 85 MW of electrical and 80 MW of thermal energy in the two cities. Five of the engines operating in Constanța will deliver ~53 MWe and 50 MWth energy, with the further three engines delivering ~32 MWe and 30 MWth in Arad.
Constituting two of the largest and innovative projects in Romania’s CHP sector, this technology will be used for the first time in the country. The equipment, supplied by INNIO Group, will operate on natural gas in a flexible configuration, designed to accommodate future use of a mix of green hydrogen and natural gas or biomethane. The engines form the heart of the rehabilitation schemes for the two power plants transforming them into high-efficiency engine-based CHP plants will reduce fuel consumption by up to 30% and significantly lower carbon emissions.

Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, owned by Ryman Hospitality Properties and managed by Marriott International celebrates World Cogeneration Day.
Unison provides a resilient and cost-saving energy solution for their Denver, CO location. With 485,000 square feet of convention space, Gaylord Rockies is the largest combined hotel and convention center in the state, with 69 event rooms and 1,501 guest rooms, plus an expansion plan for 300 additional rooms. Given the hotel’s size and large-scale events, a power outage could have a major financial impact.
Unison Energy worked with Ryman and Marriott to install a more resilient energy solution: a combined heat and power (CHP)- based microgrid. Unison designed, built, and continues to own and operate the 4 MW system, which provides the facility with over 94% of its power needs. The system captures waste heat to provide hot water that offsets 94% of the site’s natural gas usage
